Work Picks Up

It's starting to look and feel a lot like kamp is here.
Folks are starting to show up and we are making a dent in the long list of things that need to be done before the kids arrive. Not only are the Uncles getting the job done, but now we have added in a few Aunts too.

Drew hit town and immediately went to the shed to start overhauling our fleet of bikes. It's amazing to watch a guy who is talented as a mechanic. He is more like a surgeon to be honest. It's really neat to see our bikes come alive as he revives them with a little oil, elbow grease, and some TLC.

It's always fun to have komos around to help with the work load. Jenica has been here for several weeks now chipping away at the kitchen and getting it looking really nice. We are excited to say that we are ahead of schedule and looking really nice.

Erin, Lindsay, and Lauren Dixon are a few of the komo leadership and staff that have shown up to help lend a hand in getting the bunkhouses ready for everyone. I think lot's of the komo staff will be surprised when they hit Kwest Drive. Craig and his crew have done some serious work to get bunkhouses looking more like fun Hampton Inn rooms (as much as a Western Town will allow)

Taylor Allen and his crew have been busy painting poles at the pool, water slide area, and the flag poles. It's amazing what a quick coat of paint can do. It makes everything look so brand new. There is definitely plenty of painting to do so we are happy that the sun is shining and the weather is cooperating after several days of rain.

Befort, Jesse, and Jon are laying down some fresh court paint in the kdome area. Volleyball and hoops will be entertaining their kampers this summer with fresh looking arenas. It was way past time for those to be touched up.
We have also added more room in the weight room for guys like Buller and Certain. I think all of the kids and staff will really enjoy that expansion.
Our clinic training starts tomorrow. We will have more folks in and it should be an incredible lift off. Get ready to Amp it up and go to the next level.

Uncle Time!

The Uncles are Here!
Caleb, Nick, Jesse, Andrew, Matt, and Jon get the clean sweep going in the chuckwagon.
It's so fun to have the team in and get to work a little together.
The boys decided to tackle the kitchen this morning to help out Jenica.
Our first load of supplies came on the food truck, so this is really beginning to look a little like it's officially summer around this place.
We have new cheers, new birthday songs, and new bible raps on the way this year. The dining hall will definitely have that old familiar ring when it comes to Pink and the Bee, but there will be some new twists, so prepare yourself.
Michelle told me today that our komo side of kamp is really filling fast. It sounds like even the end of summer for 6th term is really full. That's so encouraging to hear.
On the kuk side, things are looking very well. We still have some openings at the beginning of the summer for our 1st term of 2 weeks and it's a great way to kick off the summer.
Stay tuned for some fun updates as more staff roll in to help us work.

Calm Before the Storm

This is what the Kwest dock looks like today.

It's peaceful. It's quiet. No boats, no carpet, no staff or kids.
Not even an aqua skipper in sight.
The cove is just waiting for everyone to show up and start having fun.

Uncle week is just around the corner and will officially start tomorrow around supper time.

One of the first things we do is get the dock up and running.
It always signals the start of what will hope to be another amazing summer.

I spent the afternoon getting my old hammock reacquainted with the water front.
A little time praying, reading, and relaxing...the calm before the storm.

I am ready to roll.

Opening and Building Momentum

I am at it again.

I am walking around Kwest like a kid in a candy shop.

We are opening kamp and I decided to come a few days early.

It's fun...really fun.

Just put up Jake's dog cage. Right after that, I walked over to the Dining Hall to hand out our first package of the summer...Jenica Flippo was the only one over there and thankfully, she was the recipient of the package. Next I grabbed a pick up and a shop vac and started at it again. It's always sweet.

It's pretty neat to think that we get to share the gospel with over 1500 kids this summer. Some of them are drowning right now. They need help spiritually. Some know it, others don't, but the reality is that I am praying God has it in His plan to allow us to throw them a life preserver and be a part of the rescue that can happen here at Kwest.

I just spoke to my buddy Brian. Right over the hill just a few miles away at Blue Eye Jr high is a young man who is drowning that needs help. I hope we can get to him quick enough...maybe even via Kwest. It reminded me of the seriousness of our call this year, as well as the urgency.

If you are coming here this summer, get ready for an awesome time. If you are working on staff, prepare to be a part of a life saving rescue. If wish you could be here, but can't, pray for us. We are so privileged to do what we do.

Stan the Man

Every once in a while, you run into someone who makes such a profound impact on you that you walk away different. That happened to me yesterday.

I got a last second call from an old friend that he needed help in a city league basketball game. I reluctantly agreed, thinking that I was too old, too injured, or too busy to exercise with a bunch of guys younger than me. Why would an old man like me try to keep up with guys just half my age?

That was until I met Stan.

He was on the other team we played. Double Zero in the program, but quickly rocketed to number one in my book. With a smile a wide as the state of Texas, and a twinkle in his eye that made you wonder what he had been up to, Stan's way of playing just made you "want" to be out there with him.

After the game, he shared his story with me. "Moved to the Ozarks a few years ago from Connecticut. Should have done it sooner" he said as he described how much he appreciated basketball players around here.

"They actually pass the ball to me" he continued.

"Basketball is the greatest sport in the world because EVERYONE can do something special" (it was obvious to me that he was a "pickup game junkie" who traveled from gym to gym finding open doors and early morning or late night games). His words were convincing and motivating.

A pinch of pride squeaked out when he commented on a move he made at the end of the game that involved posting another player up in the lane and executing a pretty sweet "old school" hook shot. "I can shoot a lot better than that" he chuckled, with a tone in his voice that just told you he couldn't wait till the next game to lace up again.

"About a year ago, I had a heart attack, but I did everything the doctor told me to do and I feel better than ever" he said as he finished a power bar and wiped the chocolate from his face.

I reluctantly asked, "How old are you Stan?"

"70...and I feel great" he humbly shared. "Just keep playing and you will never lose it."

As I walked away, I realized a couple of things: first, Stan is the man. Secondly, I hope that I am still playing when I am 70 and guys will pass me the ball for an old school hook shot.

When my own son came down the lane at kwest and dunked on me a few years ago, I won't lie when I say that took some wind out of my sails. I thought about hanging up my Chuck Taylor's.

After meeting Stan, I guess I will give it a go again this summer.

Bring on the stallions at the stable.

Well....it looks like a ghost town right now, but today it all changes.
The first part of our summer staff will be moving in today...oh, and by the way,
I am really excited.

The sky is blue, the temperature is warming up, and the supplies are ready to be used. It really is feeling a whole lot like kamp is here.

On Wednesday, the Rapps and the Wiebe's will be heading out to move in to the Westside...sort of. We will be cleaning up offices, opening up our homes, and getting things prepared f0r the Uncles who will come in next week. I am so ready to have Todd get the tennis nets up and start hitting some balls around with my family.

The kitchies and the cooks will have it extra nice this year. Craig and Leland have put some TLC into our housing so their will be lots more room, storage, and extra beds for our staff. What a fun blessing for them.
